Spanish Food Without Pork: What to Order in Barcelona
Once you sidestep the jamón and chorizo, plenty of the Spanish and Catalan table is open to you. Barcelona's food leans on vegetables, eggs, rice and seafood as much as on cured pork, here's what to order with confidence, and the one thing to check on each.
Order with confidence
- Tortilla española, the classic potato-and-egg omelette. Egg-based (not vegan), no pork, no alcohol.
- Pa amb tomàquet, toasted bread rubbed with tomato, olive oil and salt. Fully safe, just don't let them top it with jamón.
- Gazpacho, cold tomato-and-vegetable soup; vegan and safe.
- Escalivada, Catalan roasted eggplant, peppers and onion in olive oil. Safe; some versions add anchovies (amb anxoves), ask if you avoid fish.
- Calçots amb romesco, charred Catalan spring onions with romesco (almonds, peppers, olive oil). Plant-based; seasonal (winter–spring).
- Pimientos de Padrón, small fried green peppers with salt. Safe.
- Churros and crema catalana, churros are fried in oil (no lard), and crema catalana is milk, egg, sugar and cinnamon, both alcohol-free.
Check first
- Patatas bravas, the potatoes are fine, but the brava sauce is sometimes thickened with chicken broth, and the aioli is egg-and-garlic. Ask if you're strict about broth.
- Grilled seafood (gambas al ajillo, pulpo, grilled fish), pork-free; whether shellfish is permissible depends on your school (many eat all seafood, some limit it to fish with scales).
Two hard stops
- Croquetas look harmless but are usually ham (croquetas de jamón). Ask for a pork-free filling or skip.
- Morcilla and botifarra negra are blood sausage (pork). Avoid.
FAQ
What Spanish food is pork-free? Tortilla española, pa amb tomàquet, gazpacho, escalivada, calçots with romesco, padrón peppers, churros and crema catalana are all pork-free by default. Grilled seafood is pork-free too, subject to your view on shellfish.
Is tortilla española halal? Yes, it's potato, egg and olive oil (sometimes onion), with no pork or alcohol. It's one of the safest things to order.
Which "safe-looking" dishes actually hide pork? Croquetas (usually ham), lentil stews and some "vegetable" tapas (finished with jamón or chorizo), and pa amb tomàquet when it's topped with ham. And avoid morcilla and botifarra negra (blood sausage).
Are churros halal? Churros are fried in oil, not lard, with no alcohol, so they're fine. Crema catalana (the custard dessert) is also alcohol-free.
