FAQ
Is food in Bali halal?
Some of it, and it is easy to find once you know where to look, but halal is not the default. Bali is a Hindu island whose most famous dish is pork, so unlike most of Indonesia you cannot assume. Stick to certified or Muslim-owned kitchens, Nasi Padang restaurants, and the dishes known to be safe, and always confirm directly with the venue.
What is the safest place to eat halal in Bali?
A Nasi Padang restaurant. These West Sumatran restaurants, recognizable by the many small dishes displayed in the window, are halal by tradition everywhere in Indonesia, with no pork and no alcohol. They are the reliable fallback anywhere on the island.
What Balinese dishes should Muslim travelers avoid?
Babi guling (roast suckling pig) and lawar merah, which traditionally contains pig blood. Be cautious with nasi campur and sate lilit at non-certified warungs, since both can include pork, and ask before ordering. Always confirm with the venue.
How do I know a restaurant in Bali is halal?
Look for one of the two official Indonesian halal marks: the older green circular MUI logo or the newer BPJPH logo. If there is no mark, ask "Ini halal? Ada babi?" Certification and ingredients can only be confirmed by the venue itself.
Which areas in Bali are best for halal food?
Denpasar has the deepest everyday halal scene, Kuta and the southern beaches are easy thanks to a large Muslim hospitality community, Nusa Dua resorts cater to Muslim guests on request, and Ubud has a big vegetarian scene that suits pork-free eating. See our by-area guide for the detail.
